What do you think about her love life?

All woman are different, do you think that what Janie went through in her pursuit of love was correct? From a Biblical prospective, would you think her choices were correct? For example, for her first marriage, she was forced into the relationship. Soon enough, her husband began to mistreat her and not treat her like Christ treats the church. But do you think her running away from the marriage was a just choice and decision? Do you think if she had spent time working on her first marriage, her husband would have changed?

  1. I thought about that too. The text doesn't really address the morality of her choices--it kind of just says what she did and leaves it at that. I think that she took the easy way out, which was also a wrong way out. She should have honored the marriage; her story might have been very different then. She never even actually divorced Logan, she just married another man.
However, I think the grandmother's role in this should be considered. The fault actually lays with her. She was the one who pushed Janie into a loveless marriage, not taking into account Janie's adventurous nature, which longed to love and love freely. The grandmother thought mostly of providing for her granddaughter. I suppose that she had lived without love and thought that others could do the same.

  2. However, then again, it doesn't excuse Janie from doing what she did. I always think of the saying I've heard about marriage that says that "it is not to make you happy, its to make you holy." Being in an initially loveless marriage would definitely make Janie very holy, as she learned to find her source in the God that created her rather than in the man next to her. In time I believe that the Lord would have granted her at least a sisterly love for her husband, which might have eventually turned into something more. Then Janie would not only have had the advantage of being close to love itself, she would also spread it abroad.
